BEGE MINISTRIES INTERNATIONAL
SUDAN The State of Christianity Sudan has a considerable percentage of Christians especially in the southern part of the country. These Christians are persecuted and discriminated against on a daily basis. Christian ministries in the cities have some level of freedom while the rural areas are neglected. Also in Sudan some Christian institutions have been turned into Quranic schools. The Christian population is about 23.1% of the 30 million people living in Sudan. Political Climate The politics of Sudan is divided along regional lines of north and south. The Muslims control the north while the south is shared between the Christians and the Animists. Sudan had a 50-year long civil war, which led to the declaration of the country as an Islamic republic in 1983 by the Muslim north. Economic Situation The economy of Sudan is impoverished by many years of civil war and their poor diplomatic relationship. Famine and drought are major occurrences in Sudan. Their oil income and foreign aids are directed to wars and weaponry. Religious Tolerance The Muslim majority arbitrarily abuses the freedom to religious expression. Therefore, religious groups other than Islam are not tolerated even though it is not official. Cases of abuse, persecution, discrimination and pulling down of Christian structure are commonplace.
