·          The population is approaching 150 million people

·          Has over 60 million Muslims, c41% of the population

 

            Politics

 

             Became independent from Britain in 1960

·          Became a republic in 1963 and now operate a presidential system of government similar to that of America

·          Has about 490 ethnic groups but only three (Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo are recognized as the main ones thus fueling constant ethnic and religious crises due to political domination of these groups

·          Literacy rate is 64%

      Economy

 

·          Nigeria is the 7th Oil Exporting Country but about 70% of the population lives on $1 per day because of corruption. One of the most corrupt countries in the world. The economy is mainly dependent on Oil

 

       Religion

·          Constitutionally a “Secular State” but Shari`a (Muslim law) is used in most of the northern states where it became official law since 1999.

·          Christians have been massacred in the North for over 20 years, not less than 50,000 people have died.

·          Manipulation of religion by the northern elites is a major cause of religious crises that continue to plague the country. A good example was the Miss World Pageant crises that eventually led to the event to be moved to England.
