NIGER The State of Christianity The level of Christianity is very low, because the people are mostly Muslims with a mixture of traditional religion. The openness to evangelism makes it a good ground for mission work. Christians only constitute about 0.4% of the total population of over 10 million people. Above all, the number of Christians decline every year. Political Climate Niger has been ruled by the military for a long time. Democratic rule in the country has been brief. The Tuareg tribe dominates the politics of the country. Since the formation of democratic government, there have been revolts of the Taureg people against the government. Economic Situation This country depends solely on solid minerals for their income. Niger is a very poor country with about 90% of the population living subsistent. They also have a very high unemployment rate. Literacy level is 17%. Religious Tolerance Niger is a secular state with about 97.5% of the population as Muslim. There is no restriction on religious beliefs and worship, but their persecution rate is the 68th in the world.
